If you're looking to eat fish when in Kythira, then Avlemonas is probably your best shot and Skandia specifically so. Lost in the midst of the lush nature near the site of Ancient Skandia, this restaurant is a nice break from the traditional cooked dishes you'll find elsewhere on the island.

Protopsalti family opened this restaurant near the sea back in 1975 and ever since it's getting bigger almost each year. We found ourselves there after an eternal quest of some light fish and seafood meze to balance out all of the meat consumed in the days prior to that. Although we wandered around the somewhat cute Avlemonas port and pondered over a couple of options we decided to go with the most popular option around - thank god.

Mrs Evanthia does prepare some cooked dishes everyday (from May to October) using local produce, but also tends to the daily catch as they also own fishing boats that cater for most of Avlemonas fishing activity, also providing fish to other nearby spots. We obviously went for the later and devoured some lovely and tenderly crisp fried red mullets!

Their starters were also as good with a refreshing tomato salad and a homemade smoked aubergine salad that came warm - what a delight! The cicadas from the tall poplar trees carried on to their tune as the lazy afternoon went on and we still had some high quality tsipouro left enough to wash down the rest of our meal.
