Renowned as the best restaurant in Kythira, Familia is the brainchild of chef and owner Yiannis Voulgarakis who is obsessed with great food and with his kitchen.
Familia Restaurant is like a homely kitchen. The hall and the tables are just an extension to the heart of our restaurant. The Kitchen. – Yiannis Voulgarakis
Located centrally on the island of Kythira in the small mountainous village of Fratsia, Familia is a nice escape to the more upscale gastronomic cuisine that is still Greek at heart. With a varying menu of pasta, meat and a few seafood options, Familia caters to the ones looking for something more delicate than just traditional cooking all year round. The restaurant opened in 2014 and has ever been expanding to cover all of the former traditional family residence located in the main square of Fratsia village.
We devoured all of their pasta dishes and thought they were the best offering of the menu, although we hear their stuffed onions dish is the main highlight. Speaking of pasta, two were our favourite: pappardelle with mushrooms, thyme and truffle oil – a very robust recipe that speaks volumes. And traditional pasta from Crete (aka skioufihta) in aubergine paste and rocket – yum!

Their house wine is also quite good although they also have a good enough wine list with offerings mostly of Greek wineries. A nice send off with their traditional Greek ipovrihio dessert (mastic resin in chilled water) was also very welcome! We’ll definitely be coming back!
Just across the street, Yiannis has recently taken over the all-day snacks and coffee place which also offers brunch if you’re staying nearby. Maybe you also need to try.
