Haven’t you always appreciated food places when they specialise on just one thing? Tony’s pizza, housed in the most beautiful veranda of Chora is exactly that! The perfect sunset antidote for kicking off a summer night, gazing to Kythira’s sunkissed castle, Hytra island and the south Aegean sea.
Coming back to Kythira bodes well with my mental recharge as the island tends to follow its own slow-paced rhythm in a very local environment. And it came as a nice surprise to meet old friends from Kythira that have launched new projects like this gorgeous looking pizzeria.
Antonis Stathis, a local restauranteur and owner of Fossa (just steps beneath Tony’s veranda), was curious to try something new back in 2019. The moment he formed the idea in mind, together with his brother Manolis and another friend, he called Markos Douridas from R.C.Tech that has his architecture studio in the same building. The directive was simple: minimalistic interiors and an open plan kitchen, enough to have both the view and pizza on leading roles.
When I first tried the menu, a tight selection of 10 pizzas, I opted for the classic Prosciutto: tomato, Buffala mozarella, rocket, semi-dried tomatoes and fresh olive oil. And despite hurrying it back home on takeaway, the pizza was superb! Thin dough with more build towards the outer parts, fresh ingredients and the perfect texture.
A few days later I returned to have a proper meal and take in the view. The crowd started forming a queue just around 8pm but it went fast. Luckily we sat in one of the two counters, facing the sea, and enjoyed a gorgeous view. Apart from the delicious pizzas -this time we tried a simple but oh-so-tasty Marinara and the best seller Tartufata– we also enjoyed a glass of a splendid rose wine. The pizza bread was also very tasty, seasoned with rock Kythira salt and moist to perfection.
The following day I stumbled to Antonis again and chatted more about the story of this amazing place, the creative ideas from his time in London and the future of Kythira. And we made a pact on staying in touch for any future plans. Till then, cheers to the team and congrats once again!
