Photojournal: unveiling secret parts of Lake Kerkini

Photojournal: unveiling secret parts of Lake Kerkini

For most people, Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir created in 1932, and then redeveloped in 1980, on the site of what was previously an extremely extensive marshland. It’s also one of the most prominent premier birding site in the Balkans, situated along the main flyway route for migratory birds en route to the Aegean Sea, the Black Sea and the Hungarian steppes.

For brothers Constantinos and Petros Sofikitis it actually took a whole lot of new meaning when they visited recently, as part of a larger project their father took on with with highly-acclaimed film director Angelopoulos. During the whole time of the film’s shooting, Dimitris Sofikitis lived in the area meeting with artists and locals who loved this place amongst which one of the oldest buffalo breeders. Together with the head of the lake, a great scientist and very good friend of our father, they gave us unique access to the rather "forbidden" parts of the lake , helping us dive into the real core of it.
