How we choose

Every restaurant and hotel on Travel Food People is one we'd send a friend to. Here is how we pick them, and how the site pays for itself.

In short

  • Tried ourselves – we only review restaurants we've eaten at, and only list hotels we've chosen.
  • Four scores – food, service, ambience and value, each out of five.
  • No paid placements – nobody can pay to be on the site, to rank higher or to change what we write.
  • Dated – every review shows when we wrote it.

How we choose places

We've been eating our way around Greece, and further afield, since 2015. A restaurant or hotel is on Travel Food People because we went, liked it and would go back, not because it asked to be listed.

How we review restaurants

Every restaurant review scores four things out of five:

  • Food – what's on the plate, and how well it's done.
  • Service – how you're looked after, from the welcome to the bill.
  • Ambience – the room, the setting and the crowd.
  • Value – what you get for what you pay, whatever the price level.

The score you see on a restaurant card is the average of the four. Each review also gives the neighbourhood, the cuisine, the price level and the best time to go, plus a few words that sum up the feel of the place.

How we choose hotels

We pick hotels for their character, their location and how they look after their guests, from small guesthouses to special-occasion stays. Each hotel page tells you why we picked it, how good the location is, what to know before you book and where we'd eat nearby.

How we make money

When you book a hotel through Travel Food People, the hotel pays us a commission. That is how the site pays for itself, and it's why we never add a mark-up or a booking fee to the price you pay.

No hotel or restaurant can pay to be reviewed, to be listed, to appear higher on a page or to change what we write.

Keeping it current

Places change: chefs move on, menus change and some places close. Every review shows the month we wrote it, and restaurant cards show the year for reviews that are more than three years old, so you know when to double-check before you go.

Corrections

If a place has closed, changed hands or we've got something wrong, please tell us. We'll put it right.
