More and more we feel the need for staying local. And there’s nothing better in kick-starting your day with familiar faces and a good caffeine fix! The Morning Bar in Koukaki, Athens, has been around the hood since 2018 and is still keeping the bar high.
As I walk around the quiet streets of Koukaki, I take note of the southern strip of Veikou that has started taking a life of its own with so many hip brands arounds. Cafes, second hand clothing shops, a proper corner pizzeria all meld a great vibe for one that wants to feel local in this part of town.
Away from the commercial buzz and the noise of Syggrou Avenue, the cute little coffee corner of The Morning Bar definitely stands out for its style. The minimalistic design and a few design objects catch my attention as I walk by, and of course the numerous copies of Monocle magazine on display out front.
The barristas always attentive and ready to serve you brew high quality espresso beans, sourced from Area 51 (one of the best coffee roasting brands in Greece). Added to that, proud owners George Soumpasis and Ianthi Mihalaki both have a story to tell. George used to house his retail shop in this space featuring a unique showroom and Ianthi is an avid baker herself having worked in many restos in Copenhagen. When they met, George kindly offered the ground floor for the cafe, moving his showroom downstairs and recently nextdoor.
They serve some delicious, high quality ingredients sandwiches, homemade jams and chutney bottles as well as some kick-ass homebaked bread. Their must have itme? Fluffy and juicy cinnamon rolls!
P.S. On several occasions, they also feature a pop-up day menu of famous chefs like Gkikas Xenakis. Just hang around the hood and if you’re lucky enough you’ll get to try it!
