If you ask my sister, a fellow foodie, what’s her ideal place for a fun and relaxed evening in Paris, Ober Mamma in Oberkampf will definitely pop into her mind. If you ask her why, she’ll certainly proclaim: “The cocktail bar and the burrata!”. In a nutshell, this is what makes Ober Mamma special: its atmosphere, which is perfectly on trend, and its delicious food.
The restaurant is divided in two spaces: the bar and the dining area. Both beautifully decorated, make the atmosphere very cosy. The cocktail bar space with its intricate moldings on the ceiling large mirror will whet your appetite for more. The main room centers around a huge fake tree, which really gives a quirky edge to the restaurant.
My sister, as expected, is not the only one obsessed with Ober Mamma. The restaurant attracts a young fashionable crowd, which comes here for afterwork drinks or a lavish dinner. As it’s very popular pretty much any evening of the week make sure you make a reservation. We’ve been turned down twice, when the only thing I was craving was a taste of their burrata.
Let’s get to the important things – the food. Every single time I’ve been to Ober Mamma, I’ve always indulged in some local Italian products to start my meal with. Given their options, I had to oblige. My favourites are the culatello ham, the dried sausages with fennel and truffle, and of course their creamy burrata.
For their mains, the lasagna is creamy and its ragu filling brings a lot of depth to the dish’s flavour. I could also not resist the pasta with mascarpone and truffle – who would?! We’ve also tried their pizzas. The dough is perfect, fluffy and thin. The Margherita and the Napoli saucisse with Italian sausage and Espelette pepper were clear winners. Next time, I’ll give the Osso Buco with prunes and the fresh pasta with guanciale (cured pork cheeks), burrata and courgette, a try – even the thought of them makes my taste buds dance.
If not very hungry but rather in nibble mood, you can also sit at the bar and enjoy one of their cocktails while sharing the same selection of cured meats and cheeses they offer in their restaurant menu. Their take on the spritz is an obvious choice but their negroni and Big Mamma with vodka, ginger ale and fruit are not to be missed.
