Thanasis is not your typical meat-oriented taverna. Nor is it your upscale steakhouse. It is both, at the same time. And that’s the real beauty of it. Set in a remote and kind of hidden spot just off the national road of Athens, Thanasis is probably the next place you should be visiting if you’re into meat!

Set in a sunny backyard of an old establishment in Neo Halkidona, Thanasis has been serving good food to Athenians since 1948. As time passed by, the new members of the wider family have managed to modernize its offering and went from being a traditional taverna to serving high quality premium steak cuts. Not in the posh and obscure way – but in an authentic and humble manner.
Yes, in Thanasis you will find Tomahawk , Picanha and Tagliata steaks… but you will also find a wholesome portion of lamb chops just as you would in any other typical Greek taverna in the countryside. And all of them are equally tasty! Cooked genuinely well by the hand of masterful chefs and finished right in front of you. Just make sure you choose your cut wisely as the variety is quite vast with Black Angus pieces also on the menu.

Salads are also not to be missed! Everything we tried was quite delicious with fava being one of the top dishes. It was served nicely with some flambé orange chunks, caramelized onions and some capers on top. The grilled mushrooms are also amazing! To finish our Sunday meal off we ordered a delicious chocolate dripping profiterole!
