Everyone will tell you to visit Sushi Dai at Toyosu Market. But the queue, or even the sushi, is definitely not worth it so best to make it across the street at Sushi Daiwa! Here’s why!
Early morning jetlag? Sushi is the cure for it. Rolling over the bed on our first couple of days in Tokyo, we took the brave decision and made an early start at around 5am, ready to hit the newly launched Toyosu Market to check what it is all about. We knew Sushi Dai was not gonna be an option worth the 3-4hr wait (nor the sushi) from a tip that a fellow Greek chef had given us the previous night. So we didn’t event bother venturing out to it. Instead, after taking a brief peak at the live tuna auction from the observation deck at Block 7 (only a few lucky ones that get to win the lottery visit the sales floor downstairs), we walked across the street next to some warehouses to find Daiwa Sushi in Block 5.
Apparently, Daiwa Sushi is twice bigger than Sushi dai, serving more quickly and thus having 4 times the capacity at any given day. The place at 6:30am was not busy, only with a few devoted foodies inside and no queue on the outside. The restaurant used to be housed at the inner part of Tsukiji market but recently moved here when the new market was launched.
For a relatively low price you can enjoy a course of 7 nigiri pieces, 6 makki sushi pieces and a miso soup. All fresh and daily sourced!
