Thank God for the sugar cane refinery next to the monastery of Jeronimos where in 1837 created the infamous recipe of the authentic Pasteis de Belem!
Pastéis de Belém is still located in that original location serving the same original pastries that made the district famous. Every traveler that visits Lisbon finds his way there in an attempt to taste some of that custard pastry Portuguese sweets!
If you happen to visit during a weekend when the queue may be long, hold your breath and make sure you join the right one (eat-in or take-away); worry not, they go fast! First you pay, then you collect, unless you wanna sit at the back and be served. Whatever you do, make sure you sprinkle the pasteis with some cinnamon and sugar… then you can indulge!
