There are some places that feel as though they’ve always been there, even when they’ve only just opened. πikró is one of them and, in addition to delicious breakfast treats, it embodies the slow living pace of this magical place.

Occupying the seafront spot in Kapsali that many will remember as the home of the legendary Banda Landra, πikró arrived in the summer of 2025 from the team behind Fossa and Tony’s in Chora. Yet despite its recent debut, it already feels woven into the daily rhythm of life in southern Kythira.

We found ourselves returning day after day.

Partly because of the setting. Few breakfast spots in Greece can claim a front-row seat quite like this one. Tables spill onto the promenade just steps from the sea, with swimmers, locals and holidaymakers all passing by at their own unhurried pace. But mostly, we kept returning because of the food.

While πikró serves all-day drinks, aperitivo bites and tapas-style dishes that naturally draw a crowd later in the day, breakfast may well be its secret weapon.

The standout dish is undoubtedly the Tsirigotika eggs. A deceptively simple plate that captures Kythira in a handful of ingredients. Fried eggs are layered onto homebaked sourdough that has been lightly pan-fried until golden. Beneath and around them sit generous layers of local xino cheese, juicy shredded tomato, a touch of fresh onion and a few fragrant leaves of spearmint. Everything is brought together with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. It’s the sort of breakfast that feels both rustic and refined at the same time.

Equally memorable is the tsoureki French toast. Thick slices of the sweet tsoureki bread are topped with yoghurt, honey and crushed walnuts, creating the kind of dish that disappears much faster than intended.

Come aperitivo hour, the kitchen shifts gears. One of our favourites was the bruschetta topped with Drama salami, fresh onion and grated tomato – straightforward ingredients elevated through quality and restraint.

On every visit, Kristion Bousi, one of the three owners, seemed to be somewhere nearby – greeting guests, checking in on familiar faces and embodying the easy-going character of Kapsali itself. Conversations inevitably drifted toward island life and the slower rhythm that defines this corner of Kythira.

Of course, that pace changes somewhat in August.

By then, πikró has become one of the island’s hottest tables, with queues stretching well beyond the entrance and waits of up to an hour not uncommon. Fortunately, there may be no better waiting room in Greece. The crystal-clear waters of Kapsali beach are only a few steps away, making it entirely reasonable to leave your name with the host, dive into the sea for a quick swim and return just in time for breakfast.

Not many places can turn waiting for a table into part of the experience. πikró somehow manages exactly that.
