Recipe: Urban Legend Chocolate Chip Cookies

Difficulty: / 5
Years ago, shortly after I got my very first email account, I received a chain email entitled “The $250-dollar cookie recipe.” It’s about how a woman goes to a department store café, tastes an amazing cookie, and asks to buy the recipe for the price of two-fifty, which she believes to be $2.50, but turns out to be $250. In a revenge of sorts, she emails the recipe to everyone show knows. Enamored by the story (and the wonder of email!) I saved the recipe and fully intended to make the cookies. I finally got around to testing out the now classic recipe. It’s a solid cookie, which urban legend or not, satisfies any sweet tooth!
  • Servings: about 24 cookies
  • Prep time: 20 minutes
  • Cooking time: 10 minutes
  • Total time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 ½ cups oatmeal
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 12 ounces chocolate chips
  • 14-ounce milk chocolate bar
  • 1 ½ cups chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a stand mixer, cream together butter and both sugars.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and add vanilla.
  • Grind the oatmeal in a food processor or blender. In a medium bowl, mix the ground oatmeal, flour, salt, baking powder together.
  • Add both the egg mixture and the flour mixture into the stand mixer to combine.
  • Grate chocolate bar using a micro plane grater and add it along with the chocolate chips and nuts (if using) to the batter. Mix just to combine.
  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Drop spoonful of batter 2 inches apart on the parchment paper and bake for 10 minutes, or until tops are firm. Cool on a cooling rack.
