Set in the restored space of where Tokyo Roastery & Café once was established, Allpress Espresso Roastery & Café infuses a celebration of its past with an exciting nod to the future. Strong emphasis on specialty coffee, industrial aesthetics and a relaxed New Zealand vibe all come into play for a great morning in Sengoku.
Its story dates back to 2013 when Allpress founders where riding their bikes in Tokyo amidst an effort to locate the perfect space for launching an Allpress outpost in Japan. Aesthetics heavy and strong-willed the two found a quiet corner of a former roasters which made perfect sense – and indeed they achieved exactly what they wanted to! As you approach the wooden-built establishment a certain vibe hits you. Amidst the traditional and rather quiet neighborhood of Kiyosumi, you take notice of the various patrons from the creative industry that come and go all day, some with their laptops, all though in need of some high quality coffee.
The menu is not that long or sophisticated. Toasted bread with butter and jam plus avocado and eggs is probably the best you could aim for. The coffee though is second to none! Bags of green beans and La Marzocco coffee machines create the perfect vibe, together with a floor-to-ceiling glass that protects the roasters from the front of house which is used for serving plus hosts a few tables.
Founder of the Allpress chain, Michael Allpress, is by all means the reason behind the brand’s great expansion from New Zealand to Australia, Singapore, Tokyo and, recently, London. He built and end-to-end coffee bean roasting and espresso business starting from a single cart back in 1986.
This was the perfect home for our coffee, our people and our customers in Tokyo
