Dinner with friends in Tokyo? Look no further. Joumon Roppongi is the perfect start to your evening for some yummy yakitori, free flow sake and some good vibes. Located in Tokyo’s most international district, Joumon is a popular and happening izakaya that specializes Hakata-style grilled skewers.
Located just 5 minutes from Roppongi station, we walk towards the restaurant on the hilly streets of Roppongi taking notice of the international faces around. With Spring underway, the weather offers balmy nights making the sliding windows of Joumon’s set-up a welcoming treat – regardless though, the aromas from the grill will definitely hit your clothes so be prepared. We take off our shoes in the customary Japanese tradition and enter the restaurant with all staff joining a cheerful welcome.
Chefs cook here on an open-plan kitchen with the grill steaming off right in front of our very eyes – there’s action everywhere! Big traditional sake bottles and drums are stacked on the wall, floor-to-ceiling, in what seems a tightly packed space for so many people.
We’re greeted by a joyful waiter, handed off the dinner menu and along we start with some house sake. Apparently big shot cups are used here with a wooden under tray for an extra shot once you’re done with the first one. As odd as it may seem, we play along and dig in to the wide range of yakitori on offer. Mostly chicken but also pork, beef and vegetables are on the menu. Added to that, a nice short list of delicious starters like seared Japanese beef, braised pork belly and grilled miso aubergine. Apparently the menu changes almost daily so make sure you carefully go through it and also ask for any daily specials.
