Danny Meyer has long been the king of restaurants and fast food (aka Shake Shack) in NYC – with Daily Provisions, an all-day coffee-shop-meets-bakery in Union Square (where else, right?), he’s arguably becoming our favourite when it comes to tasty yet simple food!
Located next to the flagship Union Square Café restaurant of the Union Square Hospitality Group, it wasn’t hard to bump into this lovely little blue shop walking down to Gramercy Park the other day. With a great sunny day and lots to do around the city, this was the perfect pit-stop for a brief yet filling treat on the road.
Filling up bottles with their signature magic Wake-Up Sauce
Top item on the agenda? Hard to say.
The classic Egg Sandwich is a delicious fix of a soft poppy-seed brioche bun with melted cheese, a fried (runny if you’d like) egg, two thick slices of American pork belly bacon and a hint of their magic Wake-Up sauce. enough to make you full but also enough to keep you begging for more! Other savoury dishes are good to try (their chicken bacon avocado sandwich in brown wheat bread is very good!) and on offer throughout the day.
On the sweets side, the cruller is a must. Is that the next cronut? Not sure, and we’re hoping not cause we ain’t the type of superficial gastronomy fads. Baked in-house every morning, the crullers are rings of fried pate a choux, an eggy French relative to the American yeast doughnut, that taste even better (and more fatty) than a doughnut. Crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside, you’ll realize that as soon as you take one or two bites you’d be full enough… so easy on the order!
The Daily Provisions’ team is also one of their highlights with Chef Carmen Quagliata of Union Square Cafe, Pastry Chef Daniel Alvarez, and Baker Justin Rosengarten preparing delicious treats to regulars and other patrons daily from 8am onwards.
P.S. Don’t forget to get your credit card as they (rightfully so) don’t accept cash (thanks to Square).
Meet the cruller – warm, crisp, moist
