Ancient Greeks used to refer to marmalade as Melimilon, which is the name of this lovely restaurant serving as a call for going back to our roots. Back to when things were made in a simple way and flavors were all about the raw materials. This is what this family was seeking when they were expanding their homemade marmalade store into an all-day restaurant in Naxos.
Located just off the main town of Naxos, Melimilon occupies a quiet garden with a narrow view to the water, serving homemade tasty breakfast bites. Everything is prepared by the owner, a traditional Naxian lady in her 50s, cooking wholeheartedly whilst humming to the tunes playing from the little portable radio just outside her kitchen window.
A few tables of the restaurant, as well as a few rooms at the small Pension Philoxenia, are her queendom and should definitely be one of your choice when you next visit this island. A wide range menu catering to traditional egg dishes, as well as some more loaded ones like their specialty tiganita (fried pie) with cured meat, Naxian cheese and tomato marmalade – will come handy after a late night! Actually their marmalades are their specialty as they locally distribute their yummy treats, as well as offer it through various delis in Athens and Thessaloniki – look them up!
