How rare is it to find truly authentic people that love their job, create delicious treats and are always up for a chat? Well Mouratos bakery in Milos is exactly that! A family business that is run by a handful of warm people and located on the main road from Milos’ port up to Plaka, serving yummy baked goods for the last 30 years.

Dimitris Mouratos, who was born in nearby Kimolos, was the founder of the business who used to be a baker since 1936 setting up shops on the island of Chios, in Salamina near Athens and eventually in Piraeus with the help of his son Nicholas. In 1985, Nicholas and his family moved to Milos where they created this magical place in the area of Katifora. Heading there for the first time after a friend’s recommendation, I was taken by the warm welcome of the owners! As I cowardly started taking pictures of the various surroundings, Xenia invited me to the inner parts of the shop where a small yet diligent team religiously prepares all sorts of goodies from scratch.

Take as many photos as you want to… this is where the real magic happens!

Pittarakia in the making

Lucky as we were, the staff were preparing the mix for their delicious local specialty of pittarakia – golden yellow cheese pies, stuffed with a peppery local cheese, spearmint and a hint of onion. Another person was manning the big oven, tending to the hot crispy loafs of white bread. The girls were preparing coffee at the area nextdoor and, all in all, we could feel that in this place everything was somehow just working! If you happen to be there, don’t miss out on the bacon bread rolls and of course on the ladenia, another specialty here and in the area of Kimolos made out of thick bread, olive oil and tomatoes. Can’t wait to go back!
