If you’re looking for fish and seafood in front of a gorgeous setting in Koufonisia, then you’ve got to visit the traditional taverna of Captain Nicolas. Located on the westernmost part of the main settlement, this is one of the 2-3 places where most locals eat when they go out.
Originally opened in 1989 with just a handful of tables and as years went by they expanded to include multiple floors and areas outside, making it today to a total of 60 tables. Run by the Prasinos and Skopelitis family, also responsible for keeping all the small islands of Minor Cyclades connected through a local ferry service, the restaurant serves tasty Greek food with a gorgeous view to the sea!
Nicolas’ son Panagiotis has taken over in the recent years and has retained the high level of service and food. Service runs from 16:00 onwards so make sure you budget accordingly. A lot of options to go with for starters, amongst which the best are the tomato fritters! Their seafood meze were also good and what the waiter recommended, aubergine with oven potatoes (pictured below top right), was also very tasty!
Most locals visit Nicolas for the lobster pasta and lobster salad – a feast on their own! Not too much dish decoration and not at all pretentious, Nicolas’ dishes complement a picture perfect setting for your post-beach lunchtime during the summer months. The restaurant gets more busy in the evening so if you’re visiting during August make sure you get a booking beforehand.
