Freshly-baked farm bread in Greece

Dimitris Kossyfas | 3 April 2016

I’ve always had a thing about the smell of fresh bred from the wood oven, especially when I visit remote places in Greece. Here are three unique establishments you’d really love to visit when you’re next in Greece.

1. Mouratos, Milos

Located on the main road between Adamas (the main port) and Chora, Mouratos is a family-run business since 1936. In 1985 they established their operations in Milos and ever since they cater sweet and savoury basked products to the local community on a daily basis. My favourite one: pittarakia, a half-moon shaped peppery cheese pie sprinkled with a bit of spearmint and onion.

2. Tripitsi, Spetses

Located on the main pathway that leads to Spetses nightlife, Tripitsi bakery is not to miss… especially if you’re crawling yourself back from a wild night out. The bakery has been run int he same way ever since it opened in the 1970s and opens each morning around 2am. You’d be lucky if you find one of the delicious pizzas or its famous cheese pie.

3. Neochori, Pilio

Hidden in the small cobbled alleys of Neochori village, this one is a bit peculiar. Given its small size (permanent habitants of this small village are only 54!), the local bakery only produces a few loafs of breads and other specialities every day. So chances are that if you ask for bread, he may not be able to give you some. Make sure you ask politely and that you only buy one.
