There’s good food in Tinos and then there are those special moments on the island during lunch when you understand you’re living something out of the ordinary. Tereza and her authentically charming cooking corner in the tiny village of Myrsini is one of them. Waiting patiently to be explored.

Tereza, Tinos

Website, social media any other online promotion are not a must, according to Tereza who has been manning the kitchen for the last 30 years or so in this quiet corner of Myrsini behind the Catholic church of the village. A long time foodie herself, she has been working in the food business for as long as she can remember, a big part of which has been at her pantry named after herself.

A friend suggested this place, now that I was coming back to Tinos after a few years, as the place to go if I wanted to try authentic and unintended Greek cuisine. But he also warned me “you better call for a reservation” which was seemingly odd given that we were talking about the local pantry of the village. Luckily one of her two partners in crime, Maria and Markella, picked up the phone and were kind enough to reserve some space for us on a Sunday.

The menu is daily prepared by Tereza herself, comprising of Greek specialties such as beef stew in tomato or lemon sauce, baked aubergine in tomato sauce, stuffed tomatoes with rice, rooster in red sauce with pasta, rabbit in lemon sauce and on and on and on… the list is endless so you better check what’s available from the ladies themselves!

What’s not to miss are the golden fried cheese puffs with a tangy and peppery bite to them - ugh, marvellous! And as you enjoy those moments in their lush patio, try to disentangle yourself from any other thoughts and gaze to the old pigeon house (aka “peristeronas” in Greek) opposite Tereza’s garden on the hill. Around this area is where they grow a lot of the vegetables and produce they offer. That’s why the rooster, chicken and anything else recommended by her tasted so good!

Here’s to those little (food) moments in life!
