Santorini: creative and honest Greek cuisine at Metaxy Mas
What once used to be a common secret amongst the locals on the island has now started becoming the no.1 spot you must visit on the island. And to think that Metaxy Mas does indeed have a view to Anafi but certainly not the ones you'll find across the area of the caldera. The food though is better than great!
Located in the somewhat remote area of the island called Exo Gonia, Metaxy Mas (which literarily translates to "between us") is not a secret anymore. It may have taken a few years, as the restaurant first opened in 2009, but we certainly hope the quality will remain the same. A convivial taverna that brings together the best of two cuisines, Cretan and Greek, has a traditional flair with dishes that can convince even the most demanding connoisseurs.
I found myself in Santorini for a quick business trip a few months ago attending one of the many tourism conferences hosted on the island and had just about enough time to duck out and have a proper lunch at Metaxy Mas with a good ol' friend.
Serving free-flow raki and some nice appetizers to start with, Metaxy Mas is a blend of fresh ingredients and cooking made with love. What's more to ask? We started out with some cheese nibbles accompanied by black olives and some Cretan rusks - great start! The highlight from the starters was the cheese kadaifi, golden fried inside some crunchy phylo pastry and filled with very good quality cheese from Northern Greece - delicious! Their pomegranate salad, served with lollo rosso lettuce, parmesan shavings and orange sections was also very good and fresh. And the grilled mushrooms were also quite good.
To top it all off, we feasted over some traditional pasta accompanied by three juicy meatballs in tomato sauce that were sprinkled with feta cheese. A dish made from heaven!
