Athens: pure Greek meat and a casual taverna setting at Gidi
With the exuberance of premium imported cuts all around, it feels so good to find yet another casual joint for good Greek meat in Athens! Gidi in Metamorfosi, which opened in early 2017, counts more than 12 months of operation now and a lot addicted meat lovers to go with it.
The ambience, as you walk in, reminds you of the old traditional backyard feeling of a restaurant in the rural parts of Greece with the cement floor and numerous trees nicely complementing the urban landscape. Walking into the main area of the restaurant you're greeted by the grill chef Giannis who religiously and constantly tries out new ways of grilling and new cuts. Most of the produce is sourced from around Greece, with a lot coming from the north mainland like the Lake Kerkini and Veria.
Indoors there's a bit of a nostalgia going on with all sorts of Greek artifacts hanging from the wall and decorating a beautiful and peaceful setting. The menu is quite simple, although there are many daily dishes -also handwritten on the blackboard- to complement your order.
Make sure you order their delicious beef patty - a big, juicy, meaty piece of minced beef that is made of 70% beef and 30% aged beef- that tastes insanely good, especially when juiced up by some fresh lemon zest! Other highlights to share include the infamous kokoretsi (or gardoumpa as they call it here), the country sausages that they themselves make here, as well as the finger-licking lamb chops (aka paidakia) - divine!
Along come the main courses which are mostly about hearty portions of Greek beef (or pork) steaks - after all, this is a proper steakhouse with its butcher shop at the front, where all of the premium meat is stored and displayed.
Last time we were there, we tried the rib eye which was very juicy, tender with a great aftertaste. Most steaks are seasoned to perfection and unlike other places in Athens, are served as a whole and not cut into small pieces. Indeed, at Gidi you can cut and enjoy your steak anyway you like!
We'll surely be coming back more and more, as Vasilis Akrivos (known from Psariston and Salty Pig in Athens) and his team have created a great addition to the city for those of use that love meat!
