Whenever I think about fish and other seafood, I imagine being on the sand, close to the sea, preferably in a quiet island and admiring the sunset. This time, right in the heart of winter, something like that seemed like daydreaming, but it’s relatively something easy to find if you can't do without the sand, the sea and the island.

Nikopolis, or OuzeriNikopolis, is a fish tavern located in Halandri, but not in the crowded area that almost everybody knows. I know what you are going to think about. How on earth could a fish tavern can “survive” in this area and not close to the sea, especially during wintertime? The same question pondered over my mind, and surprisingly enough, I can say that this tavern has great fish and can indeed “survive”.

It was a rainy Sunday and my family and I wanted to taste fresh shells and oysters but close to our home. After searching on the internet, we found Nikopolis and decided to visit. When we reached it we couldn’t believe that it was so crowded and at first we thought of leaving and looking for something different.

The very pleasant and polite waiter, welcomed us and although we hadn't made a reservation, he managed to find us a table. The hall is fairly big with no smog from cigarettes. The service is quick and all the waiters are with a smile and so polite. We ordered gyalisteres, oysters, smelt, sardines and the so delicious shrimpballs. All the dishes smelled like sea and all of them were fresh! Of course we accompanied our lunch with ouzo.

Before visiting Nikopolis you have to note that this tavern is located close to Doukissis Plakentias metro station. You can either take the metro and then walk around 15 minutes to the tavern or get a taxi from the station to Nikopolis that the distance is around 5minutes. Moreover, note that in case you decide to drive there, the parking space is very limited. The reservation is mandatory so make a phone call before you arrive, or use the www.e-table.gr platform. Finally, Nikopolis is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 am.
