Dublin: Mexican cocktails and dreams at 777

Dublin: Mexican cocktails and dreams at 777

It's been some time since I last paid attention to the booze more so than the food, but with 777 in Dublin we ought to give it to them! A remarkably buzzing room that serves Mexican food and funky cocktails over loud music... and a hip crowd.

That's always a good place to start.

With narrow frosted windows, a black facade and almost no signs of its name, 777 is easy to miss when you walk around rainy Dublin's city centre. Luckily, a friend of mine had tipped us a few hours ahead of dinner and we opted for an early drinks night by the long orange counter! Good thing they take no reservations, unless you're a big crowd of more than 6, so off we went for a walk-in.

The cocktail list is quite funky with all sorts of spirits on the list (vodka, gin and of course tequila), and a lot of that guaca-jalapeno-agave bits in the mix. Although I'm naturally inclined for something simple (aka straight gin on the rocks), I had to try a couple of the cocktails on offer and got instantly rewarded for it!

The New York style tiled ceiling and walls, the old retro 1950's Havana style long bar and their uber-chic, hip crowd make for a perfect setting to which you're bound to enjoy yourself on a good night out for drinks. 777 is the newest link in the chain of restaurants belonging to John Farrell, who also has The Butcher Grill and Dillinger's, both in Ranelagh. It may have opened 6 years ago but it's still got that trendy feel to it.

If you're into trying a bit of everything (like me) you should definitely go for both tostados (crispy tortillas) and taquitos (soft tortillas) for starters. Moving to mains (or larger shared dishes!) the house blend chorizo taquito is definitely the best on the menu and you'd definitely want in on the tuna ceviche. For the more daring ones, I recommend the Pig's Head Carnitas. Boom!
