Mykonos: the way the island was... at the local kafeneio Odos Araxame
Sometimes, even in Mykonos, you can escape all of the glamorous frenzy and take a more traditional and scenic route to your summer days. If you find yourself in need of some of that old Mykonos, try venturing to the only traditional settlement in Ano Mera and look for Odos Araxame. A purely traditional ouzerie-meets-kafeneio where you can unwind and enjoy some homemade treats.
A classic affair, this cute kafeneio has been run by a local family and is the place where locals meet the last 30 plus years. The place may have a name, Odos Araxame (in translation the street where we just chill) but everyone refers to it by the owner's name Takis. His wife Irene is responsible for all the cooking in what first started as a traditional pastry shop (hint: their honey-dolloped revani is delicious!).
Of course there's no menu and Maria serving will help you with whatever you need. She's definitely one of the highlights of this homey place, welcoming patrons with a big smile and joy in whatever language they speak. The meze is tasty with generous servings so make sure you ask first before you find yourself surprised!
