Milos: seafood treats by the sea at Medousa
As I return to the magical island of Milos, I'm quite puzzled as to how I could miss out on this rare find of taverna-meets-great-view and quickly indulge into whatever Ms Poppi, the owner and avid cook, has to offer at Medousa.
Set in the cool and quiet fishing village of Mandrakia, Medousa is the perfect place for a relaxing lunch, gazing at the multiple blue shades of the Aegean sea. Facing north from Milos, the area is exposed to the so called Greek meltemi -high winds across the islands of the Aegean sea- so budget accordingly. Luckily early spring meant we were gonna enjoy a peaceful meal away from the busy streets of Plaka.
As we approach the place, we're taken by the view and the quiet patrons that enjoy this peaceful setting - it's way past siesta time, yet there's something serene about this place. The staff are very welcoming, friendly and to the point. Just before laying our eyes on the menu, we're greeted by a portion of schizakia, their infamous grilled bread topped with some fresh tomato purée spread.
Seafood is what their known for so we quickly make up our mind and order some raki to go with it. The Greek salad arrives -very tasty by the way- and we're quickly overwhelmed by the starters. The marinated anchovies are oh so tender and salty, the sardines are grilled to perfection and lushed with just a tad of Greek olive oil... even the hand-cut french fries are so tasty, probably because they source these from neighbouring Naxos. Who knows?
As we make our way towards the end of these (rather) small eats, the grilled octopus arrives... after all, it's one of their specials! A fisherman has been tending to the soft-bodied treats for the past hour or so, just below the restaurant and next to the sea. The process is meticulously carried out so that they all find their way to the hanger to air dry, and then... to the guests' plates! Ugh... so tasty, so good!
Just as we prepare to leave, the bill arrives accompanied by some fresh fruit and a shot of mastiha, the sweet signature liquor from Chios. Yamas!
