People: Thomas and Mario crafting the best island escape at Scorpios Mykonos

Dimitris Kossyfas | 25 May 2016

In 2014, after nearly a decade running Mykonos’ world-famous Paradise Club, Thomas Heyne and Mario Hertel teamed up with Design Hotels™ in order to revive and run San Giorgio hotel, a unique boutique hotel perched on the hill above Paraga beach. In 2015, they also launched Scorpios —a sophisticated social club complete with a restaurant, boutique, bar, event space, and beach— which by now is a huge success. The story though of the two entrepreneurs dates back to the 1990s, when the two young, small-town Germans met in Ibiza.

Having spent most of their professional careers in running their businesses in the hospitality industry, the two Germans arrived in Mykonos in the early 2000s on a 50-meter-long military boat, loaded with friends, mostly DJs, promoters, and dancers. Their goal: throwing giant parties that would spill out of the boat onto the shore. This caught the eye of the then owner of the struggling beach club and one thing led to the next. They took over in 2004 ultimately transforming it into one of the most popular nightclubs in the world.

The House

We were the first in our towns to play house music in clubs. At the time, people didn’t understand it. We thought that in Mykonos, maybe we won’t have to compromise our ideas. Here, maybe we can do it.

Athens-based architecture firm K-studio —along with design firm Lambs & Lions and stylist Annabell Kutucu, who also conceived the hotel— envisioned a stone-accented main structure surrounded by terraces that lead down to Sunset Beach.

The Beach

Like an ancient agora (meeting place), the new Scorpios beach club boasts stylish day beds and lounges on open air terraces spread across a peninsula flanked by Kavos and Paraga Beaches on Greece’s Mykonos.

San Giorgio Hotel

We’ve made the hotel this place where you walk around and you feel at home — you feel like part of the family. Which is actually the same thing we were always trying to do with the club, where you step in and you feel at home.
