Base Grill has a long standing tradition of good meat in an area of Athens that was probably off the beaten path for most of its religious fans of the northern suburbs back in 2005. It’s now back, even stronger!
Vangelis and Spiros Liakos founded Basegrill in 2005 and soon afterwards welcomed their brother Yiannis into the fold. With a clear focus on meat -their motto is “only salt comes from the sea”- they have been perfecting their cuts ever since.
In the refurbished look of the restaurant, the meat produce stacked behind the glass fridge doors immediately catches the eye upon entering. Aged pieces of beef and pork, next to an array of sausages looks very promising indeed. You take your seat and the white-dressed waiters welcome you with a nice delicate treat – meat shavings in the form of carpaccio from young tender beef from small farms of Greece – delicious! Their tomato salad -often referred to as birthday cake!- is also a big hit we definitely order whenever we visit. More starters? Of course!
Their grilled liver is a definite killer hit in the same way their potato sticks nest is, topped with fried eggs for more umami!
The menu is a bit overwhelming with way too many options as far as steaks go. Last time we were there, we opted for Greece-bred meat which are a bit more tender than the wide range of aged imported beef cuts available on the menu. Whatever you order, you’ll definitely be pleased with it as there is a cut for every taste.
Make sure you get early enough whatever day of the week you’re visiting, cause the place gets very busy during dinner as well as Sunday lunch. Service may not be necessarily impacted but the ambience certainly is!
