Rica Riccardi was on my list for quite some time now but previously no hot dishes were served at night. It became known to the area of Halandri as a proper salumeria serving Italian cured meats and cheese. Luckily it now turned into a fully blown trattoria and it’s an absolute treat to visit for a weekday dinner away from the city’s buzz and crowded Italian restos.

Katia is half Greek half Italian from her mother’s side and knows a thing or two about Italian cooking. In fact, she cooks delicious treats on a daily basis on a very tight menu that varies depending on what she will be inspired to cook on the day. Together with her husband Rothe, they make a perfect duo running this neighbourhood trattoria in a small alley in Halandri.

The day I found myself there I was meeting a friend for an overdue catch-up of summer dos and other updates. Being ridiculously late my friend had already ordered some cheese to nibble on accompanied by a fine Italian wine of Mauro Alberello. We also got to order a couple of salads as the chatter started, one with melon, rocket and blue cheese; and a classic buratta!

The place features a handful of tables outside which were all full by 21.00 so we opted for the bar inside whilst waiting for something to become available. As the chatter went on we perused the menu and were trying to make up our mind on what other pasta we’ll have in addition to the spaghetti carbonara which was a must. The linguine with anchovies and lemon were tempting enough but instead we opted for a red sauce and penne with a tomato and ricotta cheese sauce served in two textures. Both were equally delicious even though the penne one was the winner of the night.

Now we can’t wait to go back and try whatever else Katia has in mind and on offer on the daily menu at Rica Riccardi! Well done to an excellent service too on what ended up to be an astounding dinner off the beaten path.
