We love exotic food in the ever expanding food culture of Athens so naturally we were very pleased to hear of yet another Thai joint opening up. But Tuk Tuk Thai Street Food in Koukaki is so much more than just that!
Casual, fast and budget, this small joint in the outskirts of the Acropolis is the perfect choice for some quick bites with strong character. The portions are not that small and the prices are even more promising so you should soon be venturing out to win the queue for a table there.
The setting is quite exotic with a colorful array of several artefacts decorating the long and narrow room that travel your mind to places like Thailand. Don’t fret by the somewhat long queue that you may find if you visit around the busy times of the evening cause it usually goes fast. If not, order a glass of alcohol to accompany you till your spot comes up!
The menu is quite long and filling, even by just reading it off from the framed picture on the wall. A long list of small plates, like chicken satay skewers, Thai steamed dumplings and sticky Thai chicken wings is the perfect start and you’re probably better off avoiding the cliches like steamed buns (which is not even Thai by the way!). We tried most of them and they were astounding!
The menu also includes a wide variety of currys (we tried the green one which was delicious), some classic dishes like the Phad Thai (we’ll have to get back to you on that one the next time we visit) and the Laab Gai, a spicy chicken dish, traditional of the northern region of Thailand and Laos.
Apart from the great food and the fact that you can’t easily enjoy Thai food in Athens, Tuk Tuk also has great people working in it. The friendly waiter, as well as Babis, the owner, are remarkable in what they do cause they love their job. Once full with the main courses, we were offered a small sweet treat to cleanse our palate – a delicately made coconut milk cream caramel with lime zest.
Big congrats to the team for solid results and for the many years to come (since last month marked their one year anniversary)!
