Foititis taverna in the lush part of Neo Psyhiko is just about the seafood bliss you’d want on a sunny day in Athens! And despite our food antennas being very alert for so many years, it has only come to our attention recently. We recently visited on a business lunch and there were plenty of things to be happy about.
Prompted by a fellow coworker and sworn foodie, I immediately jumped on the opportunity to enjoy a nice work lunch in the sun on a balmy autumn Friday afternoon. Foititis is located in the residential part of Neo Psyhiko so if you don’t live in the vicinity, chances are you wouldn’t ever find out about it.
Captain Andreas, apart from being an avid fisherman, learned all about vegetables and fresh, high quality produce at the grocery store down at the central vegetable market of Athens. He passed on this legacy to his family with his son now leading from the front at this cute and colorful taverna.
We met him whilst taking some photos of the big fish display full of fresh fish and the day’s catch, where he shared some of the details behind this establishment.
The menu is all about fresh, high quality produce. And to add to that, there’s also some really good execution. Think of boiled vegetables… something pretty basic. Not here. We first got to pick the variety we wanted (we went for carrots, broccoli and zucchini), they vegetables were served boiling hot and the tenderness was at the right level. We also got some golden, really crisp but also fluffy on the inside french fries, as well as delicate small fish dishes: grilled sardines and fried anchovies.
For main, we shared a tasty grilled seabass that we washed down with some beer and just enough of afternoon sun to drag us back to the office. As we were asking for the bill, we noticed almost all tables being occupied with some of the quiet being taken away. If you’re in for an easy lunch, then it’s probably best if you arrive by 1pm while it’s still very quiet.
In the next few days, we tried coming back here again on a weekend but the queue to get a table is probably long. Next time we’ll be calling first!
Well done team!
