Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Psyrri, Zampanó stands as a testament to Athens’ evolving culinary scene. As much as I knew about this place (and had visited once a few years ago), I was surprised when we recently opted for a delicious brunch on a fine Sunday morning.
Situated on the ground floor of a beautifully restored neoclassical building that dubs as the City Circus hostel, this rustic bistro bar seamlessly blends traditional Greek flavors with contemporary flair. It’s early in the afternoon when we walk in and take a seat at one of the marble top tables right beside the window. The art-deco design, featuring Parisian furniture, a gleaming copper bar, and thoughtfully curated lighting, creates an inviting atmosphere perfect for any dining occasion.

Coffee is in order but as I’ve already had mine in the morning I opt for a fine Bloody Mary to accompany what now looks definitely like a brunch lunch than a brunch breakfast. The menu is quite generous in options so we decide to have three dishes to share.
Zampanó’s brunch lineup features a satisfying Smash Burger, where a perfectly seared beef patty meets melted cheese, caramelized onions, and a pillowy brioche bun — simple yet indulgent. The Croque Madame elevates the classic French sandwich with layers of ham, melted gruyère, and a tad of béchamel, crowned with a sunny-side-up egg for the ultimate comfort bite. For a lighter yet equally delicious option, the Poached Eggs on Avocado Toast deliver a creamy mix of mashed avocado on rustic sourdough, topped with delicately runny eggs and a sprinkle of chili flakes for a touch of heat. Each dish balances flavor and texture, making brunch at Zampanó a feast worth lingering over.

The meal is remarkable so a little while later we stumble upon one of the owners to congratulate on the relatively hidden gem in this busy Athenian food scene. Nontas Skorpideas, together with Dimosthenis Misentzis, tells us they dived into the hospitality scene more than a decade ago just before crisis hit in Greece. They launched one of the first funky hostels of the city and quickly turned its curbside level into Zampano. Understandably, they know a thing or two about great service.
We also found out that on certain Sundays they put on live jazz performances that enhance the already warm and lively atmosphere. Whether you’re a local or a traveler, Zampanó promises a memorable dining experience that captures the essence of modern Athens. Well done!
