Launched in 2022 in a quiet and urban neighbourhood of Keratsini, lies the casual and homey joint of E/G Taxidevontas. A seafood taverna made with care that kind of remains of the radar for most Athenians due to its location. Yet a trip there is definitely worth it if you want to experience something authentic and tasty.
We arrive there on a weekday afternoon just in time to get a table outside as the sun has started its descent onto the residential buildings of Keratsini. A welcome treat arrives so we order a bottle of tsipouro and are ready to hit the ground running.
The menu is strictly based on whatever is fresh and the service is very friendly which makes our order very swift. The chatter from the table next to us involves some shipping deals and loud laughters. You see, the patrons visiting Taxidevontas seems to be a nice blend of locals, seamen or shipping executives and a random bunch like us that appreciate authentic food.
The dishes start coming in and it’s a very delicate and tender marinated anchovies that delights us first. Next to that, a bunch of succulent steamed mussels in a very tasty broth and a crispy fried calamari.
Alongside the starters comes a very tasty and juicy portion of grilled sardines. An amazing start!
Our convo ranges from anything between work, life and plans as the new year starts so we order a second bottle of tsipouro enough to help us wash down the insanely tasting grilled mackerel. Of course the menu includes all sorts of other fresh fish (we hear their grilled sole is unbeatable!) but we leave this for next time.
Finally, the waiter brings us a portion of golden french fries that had forgotten to note down but has been swiftly prepared to perfection. Definitely one of the best ones around, crisp on their edges and tender inside.
The sun has now almost turned down and we slowly make our way to the exit. It’s a long drive back to Athens but we opt for the long route all the way along the coast and round Attica road. It’s a scenic drive next to the water as the fiery colors of sunset hit the dockyards and the oil refineries, making the trip to Taxidevontas (Greek for traveling) a trip worth venturing out to.
